Maths Week!

26th Oct 2021

Maths Week ran from the 16th to the 24th of October. We did lots of different Maths activities to celebrate the week.

We practised multiplying and dividing by multiples of 10 by standing on chairs and moving in the correct direction by the correct number of places. We really enjoyed this hands-on activity.

We challenged our understanding of time by challenging each pupil to see how close to a minute could they get without looking at the clock/stopwatch. The idea was that each child started at the same time as the stopwatch (which wasn’t visible to them) and they had to say ‘stop’ when they thought a minute had passed. We quickly realised that this was a lot harder than we had anticipated. Each child had a turn and we found our winners. Adam came first with a time of 1:00:06, Jimmy came 2nd with a time of 1:01:22 and tied in 3rd place with a time of 58:77 were Conall and Dion.

We also discussed the principle of Pythagoras’ Theorem.  Pythagoras’ Theorem works on the lengths of the sides of a right-angle triangle. It states that the area of a square based on the length of the diagonal side of the triangle (side c in the picture below) is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares from the other 2 sides (sides a & b below). Our challenge was to cut of the shapes from areas a & b and fit all those shapes into the square made from side c. Let’s just say it was very tricky!

Finally, we finished off the week with a Maths Quiz hosted by Mrs Fanning which was lots of fun! The winning team is pictured below!
